Abraham John, BS, MDS, DMD
For Dr. John, dentistry is a family affair; his great-grandfather, grandfather, mother and sister have all practiced dentistry in one form or another. Dr. John’s mother was a pioneering female dentist who inspired his love for the subject—she considered dentistry to be a combination of art and science, and it was this fusion of skills that led to Dr. John to pursuing dentistry as well.
Dr. John has been practicing in the Hartford area since 1983. He started his own practice in Hartford in 1990, motivated by a desire to provide comprehensive, quality care to everyone who sought it, and to help patients attain that care in ways they could afford. To achieve this, he has kept fees moderate and has made sure that the office participates in many insurance plans. At the same time, Dr. John has kept the office up-to-date with the latest dental technologies and equipment, so that he could provide his patients with the highest quality of care.
Dr. John believes in minimally invasive treatments and comprehensive, preventive dentistry with a large emphasis on educating patients about what they can do to help maintain their oral health. As a result, very few patients who have been getting regular treatment with Dr. John in the last 25 years have lost their teeth. Dr. John’s aim is to help every patient achieve a healthy mouth and keep it for the rest of his or her life.
Whole-body, caring dentistry
Dr. John uses the latest in dental technology to provide accurate diagnoses and minimally invasive treatments.
When practicing dentistry, Dr. John takes the health of the whole body into account. For this reason, he takes blood pressure and temperature readings, and checks for overall health conditions as part of his patient exams. When he comes across symptoms of an overall health condition, Dr. John will postpone dental treatment while having the patient seen by an appropriate medical specialist—in some instances, this has saved lives.
Dr. John cares deeply about his patients, and loves being able to help people in pain or discomfort achieve health when they first thought that their situation was hopeless. “I love reaching the end of the final treatment phase and the huge hugs that usually follow,” he says.
Education and Advanced Training
Dr. John is a highly educated dentist. In 1982, he received a master’s degree (MDS) from the University of Mangalore in periodontics, the specialty dealing with the treatment of the gums and other tissues surrounding the teeth and the placement of dental implants.
He later studied at the University of Connecticut, receiving his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree (DMD) and completing an advanced, two-year residency in Family and General Dentistry.

Community Service and Charitable Activities
Giving back is very important to Dr. John. Every year, he funds the participation of at least two members of his dental team in the annual Connecticut Mission of Mercy’s Free Dental Clinic. During this free clinic, dental care is provided to underserved and uninsured patients in Connecticut, who would otherwise go without dental care. Additionally, Dr. John travels with his dental team to Guatemala once a year to provide a week of free dentistry for the Open Wide Foundation Guatemala.
